Development

The Oppenheimer biography American Prometheus (2005) by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin piqued the curiosity of director Sam Mendes. Over the course of the following fifteen years, several filmmakers optioned the novel after the first project fell through. The writers started to lose hope for a movie adaptation. Oliver Stone said he “couldn’t find my way to its essence” when asked about directing.

J. David Wargo optioned the book in 2015; he subsequently commissioned and rejected multiple scripts. In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, Wargo traveled to Hollywood to meet with actor James Woods, who arranged a meeting with producer Charles Roven, who in turn sent Nolan a copy of the book. Woods and Wargo are the movie’s executive producers.

Long before he read American Prometheus, Nolan had wanted to do a movie on Oppenheimer. Towards the end of 2019, Robert Pattinson, the star of Christopher Nolan’s science-fiction picture Tenet (2020), presented him a book of Oppenheimer’s talks. Nolan claimed that Oppenheimer was “wrestling with the implications… of what’s happened and what [he’s] done” throughout the remarks. Unlike Tenet, which uses time travel to stop a potential weapon of mass destruction, Nolan wants to show “what it would have been like to be Oppenheimer in those moments”.

Warner Bros. Pictures said in December 2020 that it would premiere its 2021 films simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters, citing the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on the motion picture business. Not to be outdone, Nolan was in favor of traditional film presentation and has collaborated with Warner Bros. on all of his films since Insomnia (2002). According to reports in the media in January 2021, Nolan may make history with his next movie by not having Warner Bros. finance or distribute it.

Nolan had departed Warner Bros. by the middle of 2021 and was consulting with several studios to prepare his next project. Prior to this, Nolan had backed Warner’s choice to release Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) simultaneously, stating that he thought the matter had been handled appropriately. However, he said he had not been included in any conversations about Tenet’s delayed release.

It was revealed in September 2021 that Cillian Murphy was in talks to play the lead role in Nolan’s biographical picture about Oppenheimer and his contributions to the Manhattan Project.[62, 63] Owing to his tense relationship with Warner Bros., Nolan made approaches to Sony, Universal, Paramount, and Apple, among other studios.[64][65] Insiders claim that because Brian Robbins, a supporter of more streaming-service releases, took over as CEO and chairman in place of Jim Gianopulos, Paramount was disqualified from consideration early in the process.

After working with Donna Langley, the chairperson and chief content officer of the NBCUniversal studio company, on an abortive attempt to develop a cinematic adaptation of the UK television series The Prisoner, Nolan signed with Universal. Universal agreed to finance and release Oppenheimer, and Langley agreed with Nolan’s position on traditional cinema exhibition. Production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2022.

Additionally, Universal consented to Nolan’s demands, which included a $100 million production budget, an equal marketing budget, an exclusive theatrical window of 90 to 120 days, 20 percent of the movie’s first-dollar gross, and a three-week window during which Universal was not allowed to release another film.

Casting

Oppenheimer is Nolan and Murphy’s sixth joint project, and the first in which Murphy plays the lead. Murphy studied Oppenheimer’s life in great detail in order to prepare for the part, and he drew inspiration from David Bowie’s performance in the 1970s. One day, Nolan called Murphy to ask him to play the character. Murphy happily accepted, thrilled to be playing the lead in a film directed by the director. Murphy read the script to Nolan in his hotel room after he flew to Dublin to meet with him.

For the part, Murphy shed an undisclosed amount of weight to more closely resemble the scrawny appearance of the actual Oppenheimer. In addition, Nolan arranged for Murphy to speak with Nobel laureate Kip Thorne, who had collaborated with Nolan on Interstellar (2014). Thorne told Murphy about his experiences as a doctoral student attending some of Oppenheimer’s seminars and about Oppenheimer’s talent at guiding seminars on challenging scientific ideas.

Some cast members signed up without knowing the role they would be portraying because the casting procedure was so opaque.[37] Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. all accepted wage cuts to work on the movie; instead of receiving their typical $10–20 million upfront salary, each received $4 million.[82] After printing the script in black on red paper, Downey went to Nolan’s residence to read it.[83] Later on, Downey would call Oppenheimer “the best film” in which he had yet to feature.

Blunt first met Nolan in Los Angeles, and she quickly accepted the role of Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer when it was offered. Blunt immediately got in touch with Murphy to ask about expectations for working with Nolan. Damon, who had starred in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, was asked to play Leslie Groves. He was taking a sabbatical from acting due to a discussion with his wife in couples therapy, but he went on with Oppenheimer because he had one condition reserved: if Nolan offered him a role in a movie.

After questioning filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson about his experience directing writer-director Benny Safdie in Licorice Pizza (2021), Nolan chose Safdie as physicist Edward Teller. In high school, Safdie had an internship at Columbia University with a nuclear scientist. This marks Nolan’s first picture without Michael Caine since Insomnia (2002).

Filming

By January 2022, pre-production had moved to New Mexico, with a two-day casting call held in Santa Fe and Los Alamos for roles involving scientists, locals, and members of the armed forces.[88, 89] In February, a second casting call was held.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot principal photography at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico for 57 days, starting on February 28, 2022.  The first shooting schedule was for 85 days or more of filming. But it was evident during pre-production that primary photography would not be finished in the allotted $100 million over that number of days on location across the United States.

Nolan cut the filming timeline from 85 to 57 days in order to make the most use of the funds for location shooting in California and New Jersey and building excellent historically accurate sets in New Mexico.[92, 93] Murphy, who shows up in almost all of the scenes, called the pacing “insane”.

A movie based on the 1980s TV series The Fall Guy was reportedly in development, according to a Los Angeles Times article of July 2010. Martin Campbell was in talks to direct the movie, and DreamWorks Pictures was working with producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald on the project. Former CEO of DreamWorks Animation Jeffrey Katzenberg hinted on December 3, 2010, that Kung Fu Panda 3 might have three additional sequels in the series, making it an altogether of six films series. The producers of Kung Fu Panda 3 were questioned by Collider on January 13, 2016, regarding the potential for a fourth movie. Co-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson stated “With the sequels, we don’t want to try to have them feel open-ended,”.

Co-director Alessandro Carloni said, “With the sequels, we don’t want to try to have them feel open-ended. We want it to feel like a completed journey, and we feel this movie does. And then, if a fantastic story presents itself, great”. When asked on August 2, 2018, Nelson stated that she always thought of the Kung Fu Panda series as a trilogy, but she was open to a fourth entry as long as it kept Po at the center of the plot.

DreamWorks Animation declared in August 2022 that Kung Fu Panda 4 was under production. It was announced in December 2023 that Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel were back to work on the screenplay. It was disclosed in February 2024 that Darren Lemke co-wrote the screenplay. Mitchell called Kung Fu Panda 4 an homage to the original movie. He wanted the story to stand alone, even if it had links to previous installments in the series. Mitchell wondered what would happen if a sequel took away “all that” because he felt that Po’s character development from the first movie was coming to an end with him finally becoming the Dragon Warrior. This thought led the filmmakers to discover some “really great heavy themes” that they believed were significant for the modern world.

Mitchell also intended to expand the world of the franchise, add new characters, and develop Po’s character. Mitchell felt that the reason the film took so long to make was because the creators wanted a flawless tale that would push Po to the next level by forcing him to learn something. He felt Po had a bipolar perspective on the world and that Zhen, who had a more complex moral compass, would be a better fit for Po. Mitchell also desired a character who could frustrate Po in the same way that he frustrates Shifu.

Mitchell tried to create the Chameleon a villain with more brains than muscle. He continued by saying that she is the most cunning and otherworldly opponent Po has encountered. He compared Chameleon to Po, saying both figures were seen negatively by society due to their physical appearances but eventually rose to positions of great influence. He said, “So Po has become the greatest hero, and now she’s the greatest villain”.

Mitchell made sure that the Chameleon could be just as powerful as Tai Lung, Lord Shen, and General Kai because he believed that one of the things that made the Kung Fu Panda franchise unique, aside from Black’s Po, was its villains. This is why he specifically included the former back into the plot of this sequel.

Casting

It was announced in May 2023 that Awkwafina has joined the movie’s voice cast. It was revealed in December 2023 that Viola Davis, who plays The Chameleon’s antagonist, and Ke Huy Quan would be joining the cast. In addition, Lori Tan Chinn and Ronny Chieng were revealed as new cast members, with Dustin Hoffman, Ian McShane, Bryan Cranston, and James Hong all returning from their previous roles. Filmmakers had “locked in” for Tai Lung’s comeback, so if McShane had declined to play the character, there would have been no other plot for the movie, according to Mitchell, who said working with him a “blast” and a fan of his work.

Producer Rebecca Huntley confirmed that there would be “a glimpse of the Furious Five” after Mitchell announced in December 2023 that Masters Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Mantis, and Viper—collectively known as the Furious Five—would appear in the movie and that they are “off on their own individual missions”. Co-director Stephanie Ma Stine mentioned that the Furious Five was not initially planned to appear despite objections from writers, painters, and animators during a March 2024 Discord Q&A session in a fan server. Sony agreed to sell Netflix and Disney the rights to their 2022–2026 film slate in April 2021, after the movies’ release dates for home media and theaters. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and previous Ghostbusters movies were included in the exclusive “pay one window” streaming rights that Netflix signed for, which is normally an 18-month period. Disney agreed to purchase “pay two window” rights for the movies, which would be shown on Disney’s linear television networks in addition to being streamed on Disney+ and/or Hulu.

Dune: Part Two Storyline:

Princess Irulan, the daughter of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, surreptitiously notes that Paul Ateides might still be alive after House Harkonnen destroys House Atreides. Stilgar defeats a Harkonnen patrol on Arrakis with the help of his Fremen soldiers, which include Paul and Lady Jessica, his expectant mother. A mother and son from the “Outer World” are supposed to bring wealth to Arrakis, but Stilgar and others perceive evidence that Jessica and Paul are spies when they arrive in Sietch Tabr.

Stilgar informs Jessica that the Reverend Mother of Sietch Tabr is dying and that Jessica needs to take her place by consuming the Water of Life, a poison that kills males and unskilled people. By transforming the poison, Jessica lives and gains the memories of all the female ancestors in her family. Additionally, the liquid causes Alia, her unborn daughter, to awaken early, enabling Jessica to speak with her. They decide to concentrate on persuading the northern Fremen, who are more sceptical, of the prophecy. Chani and Shishakli, a friend, think the prophecy was made up to control the Fremen. But when Paul says he just wants to battle with the Fremen, not dominate them, she starts to admire him.

As Paul thoroughly immerses himself in the Fremen culture—learning their language, taking part in ceremonies like riding a sandworm, training to be a Fedaykin fighter, and helping with raids against Harkonnen spice operations—he and Chani fall in love. As a Fremen, Paul takes up the names “Usul” and “Muad’Dib.” Baron Vladimir Harkonnen appoints his deranged and violent younger nephew Feyd-Rautha to succeed his nephew Glossu Rabban as ruler of Arrakis as a result of the disastrous spice invasions. A Bene Gesserit named Lady Margot Fenring is sent to assess Feyd-Rautha as a potential Kwisatz Haderach and to entice him in order to preserve his genetic heritage.Paul is awakened by Jessica forcing Chani to combine her tears with the liquid, giving him a better understanding of the past, present, and future. While discovering Jessica’s ancestry as the Baron’s daughter, Paul also sees an adult Alia on a water-filled Arrakis and finds a single route to victory against their adversaries among potential futures.

Paul is urged by the leaders of the southern Fremen to challenge Stilgar for leadership, but he declines and instead inspires the fundamentalists by demonstrating his ability to understand their deepest thoughts. After identifying himself as the Lisan al Gaib, he challenges Shaddam, who shows up on Arrakis accompanied by Irulan, Mohiam, and his Sardaukar army. The Fremen launch an onslaught using atomic bombs and sandworms to overwhelm the Sardaukar soldiers while Shaddam meets the Harkonnens. After killing the Baron, Paul apprehends Shaddam and his group. Gurney stops a runaway Rabban and kills him.

Paul demands Irulan’s hand in marriage, much to Chani’s dismay, and challenges Shaddam for the crown. Shaddam acknowledges his part in the demise of House Atreides. The Great Houses, previously called by the Baron, arrive in orbit. If they don’t cooperate, Paul says he’ll use atomic bombs to destroy the spice crops. Feyd-Rautha is chosen by Shaddam to be his champion, and Paul defeats him in a knife fight. Irulan consents to marry Paul as long as her father continues to live. Shaddam bows down and gives Paul’s signet ring a kiss. Paul gives the order for the Fremen to assault the Great Houses after they reject his dominion atop Arrakis.Jessica muses over the start of Muad’Dib’s holy war as Stilgar leads the Fremen into the captured Sardaukar ships. Chani rides out on a sandworm by herself, refusing to submit to Paul.

It was announced on October 29, 2018, that Dev Patel would direct the action thriller Monkey Man as his directorial debut. Filming

The film was originally scheduled to begin shooting on location in India in early 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic caused delays and even the production was almost canceled. Patel then decided to film the movie on a little Indonesian island.

Storyline:

Shahid Kapoor’s character Aryan Agnihotri is a bright robotics engineer who follows up his aunt Urmila Shukla’s (Dimple Kapadia) footsteps by working for her company, E-Robotics. She invites him to travel to the USA, where he encounters Kriti Sanon’s character, SIFRA (Super Intelligent Female Robot Automation) who seems and acts like a human, but he is unaware of this fact. After falling in love, he finds out that she is a robot that his aunt is using to see if people can distinguish SIFRA from themselves.

Heartbroken, he goes back to India and accepts an arranged marriage. But after realizing how much he loved SIFRA, he decides to leave the engagement ceremony secretly. His grandfather discovers this and encourages him to follow his feelings, telling him he will take care of the family in absence of him. In order to welcome SIFRA to his family, Aryan calls his aunt and requests that she take her to India for additional “testing” against a traditional Indian household. She accepts and sends her to India, where Aryan presents her to his family as his girlfriend, creating several hilarious situations.

Unaware of the fact that she is a robot, Aryan’s family approves their marriage. She installs a malicious update before their wedding, corrupting her memory and leaving her completely forgetful. When Aryan calls his aunt for assistance, she gives him a memory backup, which Aryan installs and helps her restore her memory. After discovering the truth, Urmila—who had no idea that Aryan was planning to marry her—is against him and tells him to give her back because she is an intellectual property of her company. After a dramatic conversation, he convinces his aunt, who permits him to keep her.

While SIFRA is charging herself, there is a blackout, which makes her malfunction. Her speech becomes garbled and her actions start to jerk as she carries out previously given instructions that were revoked, such as “setting Delhi on fire.” Seeing the devastation she has caused, Heartbroken Aryan had no option but to stop her. He does this by piercing her face with a sword, which exposes the inner workings of her and makes him realize that, despite how she looks as same as human, she can not be a real human ever.

Later on, Urmila introduces a number of robots, one of which being SIFRA 2.0. Aryan is no longer the new SIFRA’s administrator, and she has had her memory and settings formatted. A new intern named Jiah (Jhanvi Kapoor) approaches Aryan and asks for guidance on finding true love. The new SIFRA begins to get jealous of their bonding, and Aryan notices her feelings and smiles.

Storyline:

During a dance party one evening, Barbie had a sudden worry about dying. A deformed doll named Weird Barbie instructs Barbie to locate the child who is playing with her in real life in order to heal herself of her ailments. Ken accompanies Barbie as she decides to take the advice and go for the real world, stowing away in her convertible.

Barbie smacks a man after he approaches her on Venice Beach after he makes advances. Ken and Barbie get momentarily detained. The CEO of Mattel orders the dolls to be recaptured, alarmed by their existence in the real world. Barbie finds her owner, Sasha, an adolescent girl, and she berates Barbie for promoting unattainable beauty standards. Barbie is devastated to learn that Gloria, Sasha’s mother and a Mattel employee, unintentionally set off Barbie’s existential crisis when Gloria started tinkering with Sasha’s old Barbies. Barbie eludes Mattel’s effort to place her in a toy box for remanufacturing with the assistance of Gloria and Sasha, and the three set out for Barbieland while Mattel executives pursue them.

In the meantime, Ken discovers what patriarchy is and experiences respect for the first time. He convinces the other Kens to assume control when he returns to Barbieland ahead of Barbie. The Barbies are brainwashed by the Kens into accepting positions like housewives, maids, and acceptable girlfriends. When Barbie shows up, she tries to talk the Barbies back into being autonomous. She is depressed when her endeavors don’t work out. Gloria talks on how frustrating it is for women to have to adhere to contradictory standards in the real world. Barbie’s confidence is restored by Gloria’s remarks.

Gloria deprograms the Barbies from their indoctrination using her real-world knowledge, with the help of Sasha, Weird Barbie, Allan, and the discontinued dolls. After that, the Barbies trick the Kens into fighting among themselves so they won’t be able to write male supremacy into Barbieland’s constitution and the Barbies can take back control. The Barbies decide to right the wrongs of their former society, stressing better treatment of the Kens and all outcasts, having now personally experienced institutional oppression.

Barbie and Ken express their regret for their previous transgressions to one another. Barbie tells Ken that he needs to discover his own identity when he laments the lack of meaning in his life without her. Barbie encounters Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel and the person who created the Barbie doll, who says that Barbie’s narrative has no definitive conclusion and that her constantly changing past goes beyond her origins. Barbie is still unclear of who she is.

Following her farewells to the Barbies, Kens, and Mattel executives, Barbie makes the decision to transform back into a human and rejoin society. A little later, Barbie—now going by the name “Barbara Handler”—is taken to her first gynecological appointment by Gloria, her husband, and Sasha.
